My how time flies!  I have been MIA for awhile.  This school year has really had me on my toes.  Diving into school and learning your new students can really take a toll on a teacher.  I hope each of you have been having a GREAT school year this year and everything has ran smoothly (I wish).

I can't believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner.  Boy, I am ready for some rest and relaxation!  My school district gives us the whole week off and I hope that yours do to.  I am thankful for life, my family, and having a career. Trying to mold the mind of our future generation can be a trying task but, it can be very rewarding when the students come back years later and express their thankfulness to you for your guidance.  If we all guide at least one student in this journey called life we have made a great accomplish.

What are you thankful for?

Solving The Mystery of Place Value

Place Value is a key element in mathematical understanding. All elementary teachers need to understand the importance of teaching place value. Solving the Mystery of Place Value Grades 3-6 goes to the heart of the area students are weakest in. This resource will make place value come alive for your students.

There are 10 worksheets for added practice.  Each worksheet guides the students to identify the missing number, and then write it in numerous forms to help engage the students further to the different numerical forms of the number.  These worksheets are a GREAT addition to your place value unit.

Teaching Tips for Back to School

For teachers, going back to school after being out for the summer can be both exciting and nerve racking at the same time. The summer is a time for the 3 Rs: Rejuvenation, Renewal and Relaxation. Even during the summer, many teachers continue to look for ways to improve their class for the upcoming year. They look for ways to make adjustments on classroom management, discipline, and lesson improvements.  Most teachers have a good idea of what they need to do to get ready for the new school year. Listed below are some tips for teachers to help make a smooth transition into the the school year.
Learn from the past
Past experiences can be the ultimate learning tool.  Teachers must rely on their experiences when it comes to all aspects of their classroom. A teacher must allow experiences, both good and bad, to guide their overall approach to teaching.  The first few weeks as a teacher is the greatest learning experience.  It sets the tone for the rest of the year. For teachers with at least one year of experience, reflecting on the past can be a valuable tool.  Teachers are constantly looking for new ideas and methods to apply to their classroom.  You should never be afraid to try a new approach, but understand that sometimes it works, sometimes it needs to be tweaked, and sometimes it will need to be thrown out all together.
Always Be Prepared and Plan Ahead
All teachers should plan ahead. It is not easy, but planning does become easier as experience is gained.  The teaching profession does not stop when the students leave.  It takes a lot of extra time and preparation to do the job effectively.   A lot of teachers put in several hours a week preparing for school for the upcoming week.  The first day of school for students should never be a teacher’s first day.  There is a lot of work that needs to be done with both your classroom and your instructional material.  A teacher who waits until the last moment to get everything ready is setting themselves up for a very rough year.
Set Goals For The Students
Teachers should have a set of expectations that they want their students to reach as well as for themselves.  Teachers need to make a list of personal goals to improve in areas of weakness that they may have.  Also, it is okay to set goals together with your students. Having a shared set of goals will push both to work harder.   Please remember that every student has their own unique needs. The goals you set for one student, may not be applicable for another.
Set the Tone From Day One
The first few days and weeks of school will often set the tone for the entire school year. Respect is often gained or lost in those first few days and weeks of school. Start out hard as the classroom disciplinarian and then you can ease off as you move throughout the year. It is vital to use those first few days and weeks to drill procedures, expectations, and goals unto the students. A teacher who comes in with the mindset that they want to be their students' friend will lose respect quickly.  This will make for a difficult year. It is nearly impossible to gain the students respect back once you have lost it.
Make Parent Contact Early
Take time to contact parents several times within the first few weeks of school. Establishing trustworthy relationships with parents early on when things are going good will make it easier should you begin to have issues. Parents can be your biggest ally or they can be your biggest enemy. By investing just a little time early on can win parents to your side and make your discipline more effective. Try classroom notes or newsletters, parent meetings, calling them on the phone, emailing them, conducting a home visit, or inviting them for an open room night.
Remember it is a Brand New Year
Touch the Heart form the Start!  This may be hard but, each student deserves your time and effort to launch them on a educational journey!  Teachers MUST remember to never come into a brand new school year with preconceived notions about students. Every student deserves the chance to come in with a fresh start. Teachers should never pass along negative information about how a particular student or class behaves. Remember every class and every student is unique in his or her own way, and they behave differently for different individuals.  Try to reach out to each students inner being!
Take A Minute For Yourself
Try to find just a little time for yourself during the day to unwind.  Try giving students some type of self paced activity and just look out the window or counting backwards from ten and adjust your mind. Teachers cannot leave the students unattended, therefore, just a few small brain breaks throughout the day can be a GREAT mental stress reliever.
Have a GREAT Year!

Back to School - Individual Professional Development

Well it is that time again! How do you feel when back to school gets here?  As for me, it is a little bitter sweet.  Don't get me wrong! I mean, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my time of rest and relaxation; but, on the other hand, I am ready to dive back in and get started planning and looking forward to another year of getting to know my students, and oh, yes - looking for to the next school break.

Right now, we are going through much needed Professional Development (PD). Not sure about your school district but, we go over test scores and how we can make them much better the up and coming school year. Expectations are high, teachers are anxious to go with all the GREAT new ideas and information they have learned from summer conferences and colleagues.  Here are some great ideas I adapted from a recent article I read on Professional Development.

Individual Professional Development Ideas for Teachers:

1.  Look at things in a different light.  Change is the key!   What can you change that will make a difference?  Also try some daily quotes to get your mind flowing.

2. Try real teacher talk.  Find a colleague working in a similar content area   as yourself.  Schedule a weekly coffee/chat session to share ideas and just get some valuable perspective.  This is a great relaxation period.

3. Keep a reflective journal  Record your thoughts about what’s happening in your teaching life. Reflect on those things and ponder solutions on how to make them better.

4. Schedule conferences. Make the decision to see what is new in the world of teaching. Always take in some conferences that are close or take in a conference that is far away and also have a wonderful “working” vacation - Great getaway!

5. Get inspired by other stories.  Other teachers success stories can be powerful sources of inspiration and motivation.

6. Review teacher training presentations.  Search for educational presentations shared by teachers in your content area. There are a lot of material right within the reach of your fingertips.

7. Incorporate more educational technology.  It is an essential skill these days. Integrate as much technology in your class as possible. The students love it and the technology keeps them engaged a lot longer than traditional teaching lectures.

8. Utilize Facebook. There are so many great groups and pages that can add to your knowledge base.  Make friends with fellow teachers and follow some wonderful pages.

9. Classroom Management.  Start of with a a smooth running classroom where students know their roles and everyone has shared responsibilities for learning, is crucial. Start learning how other master teachers run their classes so well - consistency is the key!

10. Attend free online conferences and webinars.  Nowadays, if you can't   travel to conferences, you can just use your browser!  The Internet provides a wealth of knowledge right at your fingertips!  Try Teacher Talk, WizIQ to name a couple.

11. Start following some great Blogs. Check out the blogroll of different teachers. You can gain a lot of insight from other teachers even if they are not in your content area.

12. Start blogging Yourself. Blogging is a great way to meet like minded teachers, build your own network and reflect upon what happens in and out of the classroom.  Believe it or not, other teachers can learn from your expertise.

13. Join A Professional Organization.  Join you content area organization. There are so many local organizations and professional bodies that can provide you with valuable networking and information. These are worth there weight in gold!

14. Start thinking about long term. So many teachers operate day by day and month by month.  Start thinking and planning  about where you will be in the years to come.  Make a plan and start the process of deciding what you have to do to get there, right now  Time is flying, you have to be prepared!

15. Spend more time on yourself. The key to good teaching is how wisely   you recharge yourself.  You MUSt take time for your own self outside of teaching - recharge!

16. Find out the top teaching websites. Research is a quick way to get many of the best websites for teaching in your content area. There is a wealth of information available, just search.

17. Ask students what they want. The key to a great classroom is an ongoing needs analysis.  Negotiate the classroom with students. You’ll learn so much from them! When one teaches, two learn”. LOVE THIS!

18. Videotape yourself. This is an excellent way to get some valuable knowledge about your own teaching microskills. Simply set up a camera at the back of the class and start there. Or just use an audio recorder (your cell phone will work).

19. Get peer feedback.  This can be informal or formal, the key is to share your classroom with a colleague you value and trust. Just let them come in the classroom and talk about it afterwards.

20. Stay true to yourself.  The key to any professional development as a teacher is to forgive yourself, the lessons that didn’t work and the bad days. Keep positive and it will all work out!

All I can say is I hope your school year starts off GREAT and hopefully, you can gain a handle on those first day butterflies.

Back-To-School Product!

I have spent the last few days designing a must have for middle school students.  This interactive book is GREAT for the first few days back to school.  You can easily incorporate two or three of these activities daily until they are complete. You can use all or only the ones you need. You pick the activities that are appropriate for your students. Once complete, these booklets makes a great open house present for parents and a GREAT keepsake for the students.

GREAT for Back to School!

The cover has two different versions to choose from. I created a regular flap where the students can write their information or a Pot of Gold where they write the letters of their name on gold coins. Personlly, I am saving the "Pot of Gold" one for St. Patrick's Day; the choice is yours.

Another activity included in the resource is a School Activity shown below. This activity allows the students the opportunity to open the windows and doors to reveal the Class, Room #, Teacher's Name, and the sign can be lift to reveal the School Name.
,
This is my favorite of all the sheets included in the resource. Each child gets the opportunity to document some of their favorite things. The sheet above allows room for movies, food, subject, and color. Included in the resource is another sheet provided for more favorites.

Other activities include:

- My Age
- My Pickup (Bus and Car)
- If I were the teacher?
- My Birthday
- My Family
- My Hobbies and Interests

If you would like to see more on these interactive activities, please check it out here.

WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

This is my very first blog post and I am so excited that you have come along for the ride with me.  Things have been so CRAZY with this first blog post (it kept disappearing on me). I tried for about  month to no avail. Now, I can say thanks to my blog designer, Kristy Bearfield at KristyBear Designs, I hope to have most of the bugs worked out.  If you do not have a blog or need an upgrade, I highly RECOMMEND Kristy!  She is a complete jewel to work with and has the patience of Job.  Within one evening she had me up and running. I know I must have been her worst customer.  Through it all she never gave up and now I am on my way! Yay!

Right now, the blog is a work in progress but, I hope you enjoy yourself and follow me as I continue to write more informative content.
